Simon McLaughlin- Marketing Executive- NVT Group
"I’m lucky to have been offered an internship, let alone a permanent job. It was and still is a tough time for graduates. Placement work is the single best thing a new graduate can do. From experience, businesses aren’t looking at qualifications, they’re looking to see what experience you have in the working world- that’s where your real value comes from! It took a while to find somewhere, but NVT were welcoming and always on hand to help out with whatever training and development I needed. It's good to be surrounded by so many professionals in a company that prides itself on regularly training and developing its employees."
Simon joined NVT Group in April 2009 on placement as a Bachelor of Arts graduate in Media, Marketing and Cultural studies. In the 6months he spent on placement with the group he worked closely with Flame Multimedia, a digital design company bought by NVT in 1996. Here he worked with the design team on a number of e-campaigns, writing and designing marketing and sales material for existing Flame and NVT clients as well as contributing his writing to the Flame and NVT websites.
When his placement period ended Simon was offered the job of marketing executive for the group. Working more broadly with NVT on a number of internal e-campaigns and marketing initiatives he also introduced NVT to the world of online marketing via social media sites Twitter and Facebook.
“This year at NVT is providing me with first-hand experience of a fascinating industry, that I will be able to apply to my degree. Spending my industrial placement with the professionals at NVT adds to what I can put into my studies and will be invaluable to my employability when I re-enter the Job market.”
Innes has joined NVT for what is the 2010/11 academic year on industrial placement from Sheffield Hallam University. Within this period, Innes is experiencing first hand, the key business operations that his Business and Marketing degree focuses on, cementing existing skills and setting a solid foundation to build upon for the final year of study. Working closely with the marketing executive and sales team at large Innes is gaining a valuable insight into how we as a business promote ourselves and our services to both customers and potential clients.
"For my work experience I spent a thoroughly enjoyable week at NVT. During this week, I learned many great things about how a business operates on many different levels and I am sure that I will take this new found knowledge forward into future employment. I found that NVT was a very welcoming company, where everyone was willing to share, help and promote best practice. Without exception, all staff where very willing to help me learn, taking time out of their busy day to help. I hope one day, to be fortunate enough to actually work for a company with a work ethos as great as NVT"
Charlie spent a week with NVT for his school’s Work Experience, receiving the complete corporate experience spending time with all major sections of the company, witnessing how NVT works as a whole.
Tom joined NVT Group on a year-long placement taking place every Wednesday afternoon, as Dalziel High School’s preferred format over a week block.
During that time, Tom undertook work within a multitude of departments acquiring understanding in stock movement & handling, as well as hands on experience with key enterprise software.
Rebecca joined us last year from her Grammar school studies supporting reception.
As part of our commitment to giving those we invest in the best experience, NVT look forward to welcoming Rebecca back in the future for a new experience in the logistics department.
Kirsten has spent the last 3 summers working at NVT both in an administrative role in reception and working closely with our account and logistic teams. Kirsten started her summer role with NVT while she was still at Coltness High School and is currently in her second year of medical school at the University of Glasgow. NVT has developed Kirsten’s administrative abilities and has invested time in exposing her to as many of the day to day duties of the NVT office as possible.
