Ten Years Later: We’re looking back to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

23rd July 2024

Today marks 10 years since the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games took place at Celtic Park and kicked off 11 days of incredible sporting competition in venues all around Glasgow.

As we reach this milestone, we reflect fondly on the Games and give sincere thanks to the many people who played a part in making them such a success.  This includes our people, our partner businesses, local schools, colleges and universities, our clients and customers who supported us, not only during Games-time, but throughout our entire journey to Glasgow 2014 and beyond.

As the summer sun shone on the Glasgow Games, the technical skills of our people shone in each competition and non-competition venue (29 in total), delivering first-class help desk and hands-on IT support, so that the different functions of the Games could conduct their work with the greatest efficiency.

To the ‘NVT Players’ – no, we haven’t forgotten your enormous contribution to delivering the technology at these Games and making it such as success.  You gave your time, your energy and your commitment to help deliver a world-class IT service, which in turn enabled a sporting event of this calibre to be staged and presented to the world.  For that, ten years later, we thank you.  You were our “class of 2014” and the example you set inspired so many more NVT Players to put themselves forward and rise to the challenge in the decade that was to come.

We hope you look back on your Games experience with the same affection that we do and, most importantly, with a sense of pride in a job which was so very well done.

Special mention must go to our colleagues at Glasgow Caledonian University for their partnership, their assistance in our recruitment drive and for hosting our Post-Games Graduation Bash.  We also give thanks to the former Lord Provost of Glasgow, Sadie Docherty, for her support.  And our gratitude goes to David Grevemberg CBE for his leadership.

With much appreciation,

Everyone at NVT Group.

Technology Services Integrator – NVT Group at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

Throughout an eighteen month period culminating in the summer of 2014, our team designed, built, tested, deployed, supported and decommissioned the Games Data Network, i.e. the ICT infrastructure required to stage the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

As the Official Technology Services Integrator, we worked closely with a number of technology partners to ensure that Glasgow 2014 was the most successful Commonwealth Games ever.

NVT Group provided management, monitoring and technical support across the Games Data Network during Games time, ensuring that the media, the OC, the athletes and other key stakeholders enjoyed a seamless, efficient and consistent ICT service.

We devised an inclusive and empowering technology volunteer programme, the ‘NVT Players’, which not only provided the necessary resource to support the Games but also delivered skills training and hands-on experience to technology students at Glasgow universities, as well as technical experts from our client and partner networks. This resulted in a dedicated team of over 300 NVT Players, all of whom provided support services on site at competition and non-competition venues throughout the 11 days of the Games.

All of this resulted in a wholly successful contract delivery with a “100% uptime, zero failure” rate. Our work at Glasgow 2014 was called “a world-class performance” by Chief Information Officer Brian Nourse. David Grevemberg, Chief Executive, called our volunteer programme “innovative” and our engagement model “a Games changer.”
