Skills may be in short supply, but it proves that it’s time for a more managed approach to IT

If you have tried to hire any IT people recently, you have probably encountered some challenges.

What is starkly apparent is that the pool of talent is evaporating. What makes it worse is that the dwindling number of highly skilled people in the labour market has also led to substantial rises in salary expectations.

Put simply, the expertise you need is getting harder to find and people with the right level of know-how are more expensive to hire than ever.

Let’s look at the facts.

The truth is that employers across all sectors have been struggling with recruitment for some time, with vacancies beginning to rise substantially whilst the UK was in the throes of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Whilst demand for labour has recovered to pre-pandemic levels, workforce numbers have shrunk.

A multitude of factors have come together to create this perfect storm.  We have already mentioned the pandemic, but Brexit and the rising costs of living have also been majorly disruptive to the UK labour market.

That said, even before these events came to pass, problems were already manifesting. Thinking about the IT labour market specifically, in 2018 there were over 130,000 software developer vacancies (the most in-demand role across UK cities).

This remained the case by 2020, showing that the demand simply hadn’t been satisfied. The most recent data from the Office for National Statistics shows that vacancies in Information & Communication industry have increased by 83% from last year, with thousands of extra jobs on the market but no skilled workers to fill them.

If the trend continues, the IT skills shortage could very well become an IT skills emergency. After all, even the tried-and-true agency method of recruitment can’t solve the problem if there is simply nobody out there worth recruiting.

Thankfully, we are here to tell you that there’s a better way forward. If your business relies on IT to survive and thrive, what is there to do when you can’t find the right professional to support it?

Managed IT Services and The Power of Know-How

The simple answer is to take a more managed approach. If you have never considered outsourcing any part of your organisation’s IT function before, please allow us to reaffirm the benefits for you.

Many of those benefits are shown in the infographic above. However, the most compelling benefit (particularly in the context of a UK IT skills shortage) is that, by entrusting your IT Services to NVT Group, you are not just benefiting from the experience of an individual. Instead, you are leveraging the combined skills, knowledge and expertise of our whole team, which consists of Senior Technologists, Technical Consultants, IT Project Managers and System Engineers.

Investing in and retaining the right people

Even at NVT Group, a depressed IT labour market could potentially spell problems for us in the future.

That’s one of the reasons why we invest so heavily in our people. We want them to feel valued, respected and empowered.

We have been a Gold Standard Investor in People since 2010 and a Gold Standard Investor in Young People since 2015.

Our Modern Apprenticeships programme is award-winning. Indeed, we do our bit to help fill the gaps in the labour market by empowering young people with the skills, expertise and attitude needed to excel in a career in IT. Wherever possible, people stay with us after completing their apprenticeships. Also, our engagements at sporting events traditionally offer similar opportunities for people that are taking their first steps in their IT career.

“Be knowledgeable” is one of the key values we promote every day. We reward learning and knowledge building at all levels within the business. We also have an impressive track record of promoting internally, thereby giving people a clear life-long career path should they wish to take it.

That is why it is so gratifying to see that the people who join our team like to stay with us for a long time.

This is no better exemplified by the stats, which tell us that 70% of all NVT Group employees have worked with us for over ten years. Amongst that figure, 30% have worked with us for over 15 years and another 15% have worked with us for over twenty years.
