Keep safe this Data Privacy Day

Data privacy should be high on the agenda for all businesses in today’s digital age.

This Data Privacy Day, we’re looking at the latest figures released by the Department of Culture, Digital, Media & Sport within their Cyber Security Breaches Survey. These statistics highlight the current threats and the changes that businesses are implementing. They also show that regardless of company size, location or sector, it’s now more important than ever to stay on top of data privacy matters.

GDPR and Cyber Security

The General Data Protection Regulations came into force in May 2018, which had major implications for the way businesses process and use personal data. Following its implementation, there has been a significant increase in the number of organisations focusing on their data privacy and cyber security measures, and rightly so. Falling victim to a cyber breach or attack under GDPR has serious implications for a business and can result in major fines, not to mention the detriment to reputation.

As apparent from the above statistics, the threat of cyber crime is getting increasingly serious. The IT threat landscape is ever changing and expanding. Existing threats such as ransomware and crypto attacks continue to affect organisations’ networks and digital assets, whilst newer and even more lucrative cyber crimes, such as form jacking (which steals user data) and targeted attacks (which divert funds from supply chain transactions) increase at a vast rate. To address these threats, organisations require increased protection, improved detection and effective response if an attack does compromise one or more systems. Cyber-security provisions also need to keep pace with the ever changing threat landscape.
