Scottish Athletics are delighted to announce a sponsorship deal with the NVT Group for the Club Together programme. And Glasgow 2014 chief executive, David Grevemberg, has welcomed the partnership as important for the sport at grassroots level and the Commonwealth Games legacy.
The governing body for the sport in Scotland started the Club Together scheme almost two years ago with the intention of creating a lasting legacy within athletics through increasing participation and improving performance. Now the partnership with the NVT Group, who are the Official Technology Services Integrator for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, will help further enhance and extend the programme across the length and breadth of Scotland.
Initial figures collated for 17 clubs where a part-time officer has been installed have been impressive – with hundreds of new athletes, coaches and volunteers getting involved in the sport. It has made the scottishathletics Club Together programme the envy of other sports in Scotland and the support of the NVT Group, via a five-figure investment, will ensure that it is expanded with help from sportscotland. The programme will now be known as the NVT Group Club Together Programme and clubs involved will be asked to raise their profile locally.
‘We see Legacy as our core business – something we work on seven days a week and 52 weeks of the year through our clubs,’ said Nigel Holl, chief executive of scottishathletics.
‘Clubs were working on that before London 2012 and clubs will work on it after Glasgow 2014. That is why the NVT Group Club Together Programme is so important because it takes support and help directly to the clubs.
‘So far we have 17 clubs operating with a part-time Club Together Officer with that person asked to facilitate change at the grass-roots level. That works starts in the car park by encouraging parents of young athletes to get involved in the club environment. It then extends to schools, local authorities and the club committee.
‘The results so far are dramatic. Clubs that bemoaned a lack of help are now benefiting from hundreds of new coaches and volunteers and they are able? to cope with the influx of new athletes.
‘We know that in this programme we have a plan that is a real “game changer”. We’re delighted to have the support of the NVT Group and feel certain that will ensure even greater impact.
‘I think our partnership will benefit not just both parties but, perhaps most importantly of all, many athletes and young people in clubs (or soon to join clubs) right across Scotland.
The NVT Group are a privately owned and Scottish head-quartered ICT business who deliver infrastructure solutions to both private and public sector organisations in the UK. Currently employing over 80 staff, the NVT Group will grow to over 100 full time staff by summer 2013 to meet the demands of new business opportunities. Hamish Fraser, Director at the NVT Group, said: ‘We are delighted to have been appointed as the Technology Services Integrator for the Games in 2014. This contract allows the NVT Group to grow and to increase its contribution back into local communities through direct athlete sponsorship and legacy initiatives such as the NVT Group Club Together programme.
‘We are also supporting 15 new modern apprenticeship places. It is hoped that we can attract young athletes who qualify for this programme into an apprenticeship so they can earn and learn while training for competition and have a career path in IT.’
David Grevemberg, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2014, said: “We are delighted to have NVT – a home-grown Scottish IT business success story – helping us deliver the unique high-performance technology needs of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, which will undoubtedly be the largest multi-sport event Scotland has ever seen.
“The company has already committed to creating opportunities for young people to gain valuable work and training as part of its Games programme and its backing of grassroots sport is a fantastic way to help inspire and support young people participating in sport both now and in the future.”
